Andover Warehouse Fire Part 2
|
Firefighters tackle large warehouse fire in AndoverFirefighters from Hampshire have today been tackling a fire at a warehouse in Greenwich Way, Andover.Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service Control Room Operators were alerted to the incident at 03:28 this morning [Monday, 21 June) and mobilised crews from Andover, Whitchurch, Sutton Scotney, Stockbridge and Overton fire stations to the scene. Crews from nearby stations in both Wiltshire and Berkshire were also mobilised to attend. Supporting resources included the Aerial Ladder Platform and Command Support Unit from Basingstoke Fire Station. At the height of the blaze approximately fifty firefighters were at the incident, using five jets, and ten sets of breathing apparatus to fight the fire. The Aerial Ladder Platform monitor was also in use to tackle the blaze from above.Around 50% of the steel framed building, which measures approximately 56m x 36m, was involved in the fire, and 50% of the roof has collapsed. A fire break was put in place to prevent further spread of the fire.Group Manager Kevin Evenett, Officer in Charge of the incident said: Crews were quickly in attendance at the incident and due to their rapid and professional actions they were able to prevent the fire escalating and spreading throughout the building." Acetylene cylinders have now been discovered and consequently a precautionary flexible exclusion zone of 200 metres has been put in place at the scene and measures are being taken to reduce the risk of the cylinder/s exploding. This has resulted in the closure of Greenwich Way and several businesses in the area have been evacuated accordingly.Farnborough based, QinetiQ, are providing a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to enter the building in order to assess the acetylene cylinder/s. Acetylene presents a unique risk, in comparison to all other bottled gases, due to its instability. Heating or mechanical shock can cause the acetylene to heat up and possibly explode. This can put the public and firefighters at immediate risk and lead to massive consequential disruption and financial loss in the public and private sector. The risk of explosion can remain for up to 24 hours, unlike all other gases which are safe once the initial fire has been extinguished and the cylinder is cooled. In the past, whole acetylene cylinders and fragments have travelled nearly 200m following an explosion.
