July 15 ~ Phoenix Leaves his Hornby Nest
|
On Wed. July 14, 2010 there was sad news at the Hornby Island Nest. Around 2:30 pm Phoenix was observed to be having trouble breathing. Rescue permits and plans were being put in place; but Phoenix's condition was deteriorating. He was having more difficulty breathing and lay down. About 7 pm he moved to face the water and at 7:19 pm slipped away to join his sister Echo (2009) and other eagles to soar with them. Phoenix was a week or so shy of fledging. On Thursday July 15, a young man by the name of Dan climbed the tree and within a minute had carefully and gently removed removed Phoenix from the nest. Before Dan went back down the tree he gave the viewers a wave.Phoenix, you have left a large imprint on so many people around the world. Thank you for being with us. We wish you warm thermals on which to soar and a plentiful salmon season. With much gratitude to Doug and Sheila Carrick, Boonibarb and winterwren ( who were with Phoenix on Thursday) and all the Hornby Eagle Group who made the 2010 viewing season possible.© Doug Carrick 2010 .
